It is a suburb of the Denver-Aurora-Broomfield, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Roughly 10 miles southwest of the city of Thornton lies the capital of the state, Denver. Thornton was literally just a farmland until the year 1953. In that year, Sam Hoffman purchased a plot of land just outside Denver wherein he laid plans for a community. It was the very first of its kind in Adams County, as well as the first that provided full municipal services off a single tax levy. The name of the city was chosen to honor Former Colorado Governor Dan Thornton.

The Thornton community Association (or also known as TCS) was formed to help guide the community through its development. There were almost 5,500 individuals lived within the city of Thornton within around 1,200 homes during the year 1955. In the year 1956 Thornton was incorporated, due largely in part to the TCA. The first mayor of Thornton was a City Council candidate, G. Leary. Brian Thornton, is not related to the Governor.

There are over 80 parks located all around the city and about 2,000 acres of land dedicated to open spaces and parks. There are several trails running all over the city. Combined together they stretch more than 80 miles. There are numerous recreational complexes in Thornton, like for instance the Margaret Carpenter Recreation Center and the Thornton Community Center. There are likewise three major golf courses in the city of Thornton: Thorncreek Golf Course, Heritage Todd Creek Golf Club, and Riverdale Knolls Golf Course.

There are several historic locations that are located within the nearby city of Denver, like for example the Colorado Governor's Mansion, the Denver Mint and the Colorado State Capitol. There is also the Forney Museum of Transportation, which features a selection of antique carriages, automobiles, trains and bicycles. Some of the other attractions nearby consist of Grasmer Lake and Holly Park, Park Hill Golf park and Denver Zoo. In September, Thornton hosts the Harvest Fest and in the month of December, the Winterfest.
